High-speed chase suspect killed after slamming into Galveston Seawall barrier at 95 MPH * Nicaraguan national was involved in a rear-end crash in Harris County before fleeing to the island A high-speed chase that began with a minor crash in Harris County ended with a fatal crash when the suspect slammed into a barrier at the end of the Galveston Seawall Tuesday (11/25/2025) night. The incident started around 10 PM when a Honda sedan rear-ended a Ram truck in Harris County. As the sedan sped away, the driver from the Ram chased after it, calling 911 as the pursuit continued south on Interstate 45. Eventually, a La Marque police officer spotted the vehicle on Interstate 45 near Delaney Road and initiated the chase, which at times exceeded 90 MPH. The Honda driver went “black,” meaning he was driving without his headlights on. As the chase neared Galveston, deputies from the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and officers from Galveston Police joined in the pursuit. As the high-speed chase entered the island, Galveston Police blocked intersections and took part in the pursuit. At one point, despite a blown tire from police spikes and running on the rim, the suspect reached speeds over 100 MPH heading east on Broadway. The pursuit continued as the fleeing driver headed east onto the Galveston Seawall. With the roadway ending, the driver kept going before crashing into the road barrier at the far east end of the Seawall at 95 MPH. The crash was so severe that the car split in half. Pieces of the Honda’s engine and rear spoiler remained on the seawall Wednesday afternoon. The driver was killed in the crash, officials said. Since his family had not been contacted, his identity was not released. Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office Chief Investigator DJ Florence said the man was a Nicaraguan national living in Houston. Officials confirmed that the man has a green card and is not in the country illegally. Because La Marque was the first agency involved in the chase, it is considered the primary police department for the investigation. “As we always do, we review the case to ensure all policies and procedures are followed,” La Marque Deputy Chief Chad Waggoner said. “From all the initial information we have so far, it appears our officer acted properly and followed our chase policies and procedures." The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Galveston Police Department as third-party investigators of the crash.
