Arrest made in wrong-way crash that killed UTMB nursing student The Galveston County Sheriffโs Office on Monday (11/24/2025) arrested a League City woman on a charge of intoxicated manslaughter in connection with a fatal wrong-way crash on Sept. 22 on the Mitchell Causeway in Galveston. Neil Andrei Quinones Abad, 23, was driving south on Interstate 45 en route to UTMB Health Galveston when his Honda Fit was struck head-on by a Honda CR-V that was going the wrong way. Abad, who was in his final year of nursing school, died at the scene of the crash. Sheriffโs office investigators said that the CR-V was caught on security cameras going north in the southbound lanes of Broadway and continued the wrong way into the causeway just after midnight on Sept. 22. The car eventually crashed into oncoming traffic on the Tiki Island side of the causeway. Abad was killed, and several people were injured. Among the injured was ๐๐๐๐๐บ๐ป ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ, ๐ฎ๐ต, who was the driver of the CR-V. She had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to UTMB Healthโs Emergency Center for treatment of her injuries. Avina is charged with intoxicated manslaughter and was booked into the Galveston County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
