Texas City Gun Range Closes After Bullets Nearly Hit Fisherman The City of Texas City announced on Tuesday (9/30/2025) that the municipal shooting range will be closed to the public following a report from an angler who said bullets nearly hit him while he was in his boat nearby. The range is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but La Marque Chief Deputy Chad Waggoner said the La Marque Police Department’s Special Response Team was training at the range on Tuesday. Just before 2 PM, a man fishing in Moses Lake called police to report that bullets flew past him while he was in his boat, Texas City Police Chief Landis Cravens said. Moses Lake is a body of water with a shoreline close to the gun range. A close friend of the angler told i45NOW that the fisherman, who wished to remain anonymous, wasn't hit but was shaken by the experience. Cravens said a patrol officer was dispatched to the gun range after the fisherman called from his boat to report the near miss. Cravens added that when the officer arrived, nobody was at the range. Waggoner said the SRT commander told him that they remained at the range until 4 PM. Jennifer Laird, Texas City's communications director, said the range will remain closed while officials investigate the incident. Cravens said he reviewed photos and videos of the training that were posted to the La Marque Police Department's Facebook page. “I just saw that LMPD posted about their training,” Cravens said. “Not real sure on their use of the back-stop berm at the range.” The range features earthen berms designed to prevent bullets from leaving the property. The berms are located at the back of the range, but near where the angler was fishing when the bullets whizzed close to him. It's unclear if safety protocols weren't followed or if the berms did not work as intended.
