One dead, several injured after wrong-way driver crash on Galveston causeway One person was killed, another was in critical condition, and several others were injured in a fiery overnight crash at the southbound base of the Galveston Causeway overnight Monday (9/22/2025). Officials said the crash was caused by a wrong-way driver. It was about 12:10 AM when callers to Galveston 911 reported a red SUV headed northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 45. A few minutes later, multiple callers reported a multi-vehicle crash at the base of the southbound side of the Causeway. As first responders from Tiki Island police, fire, and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office arrived, the red SUV and three other vehicles were wrecked from a wrong-way driver crash. At least two people were trapped in their vehicles. Galveston police closed the southbound lanes on the island side of the causeway, and the La Marque Fire Department blocked the southbound lanes of I-45 near the Texas City Wye. As the Galveston Fire Department and Galveston EMS arrived on scene, one crashed vehicle caught fire, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Melencio Vilarreal said. One person died on scene, while another, who was in critical condition, was taken by ambulance to the Level 1 Trauma Center at UTMB’s John Sealy Hospital. The freeway remained closed for the crash response until about 5:45 AM. Traffic on the Gulf Freeway southbound resumed at about 5:50 AM.
