Portion of Seawall Blvd Closed After Roadway Buckles in Galveston UPDATE: Roads Open After Temporary Repair on Galveston Seawall A temporary repair has been implemented on the buckling of the road on Seawall Boulevard between 77th and 79th Street on Monday (08/18/2025). A permanent repair is being planned for sometime in September. The Seawall Boulevard east and west between 77th Street and 79th Street were closed on Sunday (8/17/2025) after a portion of the roadway buckled. The roadway gave way at around 5:30 PM. Galveston’s traffic division and police blocked the lanes, awaiting state road crews to arrive and make repairs. Galveston City Manager Brian Maxwell said such incidents happen “every other year” on the west end of the Seawall and in the area on the east end past 1st Street. This is the TxDOT portion of the seawall, but Maxwell said, "we've offered our services to TxDOT as well to help them in any way." TxDOT has been notified and they will be doing a temporary repair then schedule a permanent repair. The buckling is caused by heat expansion of the asphalt roadway. No accidents caused by the buckling have been reported.
