United Way Aims to Distribute Fans to Seniors in Galveston County as Temperatures Rise With some of the hottest days of summer ahead, many in the area will spend significant time indoors where air conditioning keeps them cool. However, for hundreds of older residents of Galveston County, the heat inside their homes remains overwhelming due to a lack of air conditioning or small units that can’t keep up with the rising temperatures. After an elderly man, who regularly receives assistance from United Way Galveston County Mainland, was found to have no air conditioning in his home, an anonymous donor provided funds to purchase fans. This inspired an idea: what if the United Way started a fan drive to support others in the community? Last month, the agency launched 'Breeze Through the Summer,' which provides fans with cooling towels and, in some cases, window air conditioning units. So far, approximately 50 senior citizens have received fans and other cooling items, said Leslie Ornelas, CEO of United Way Galveston County Mainland. The demand is much higher, and United Way urges those who can to donate to help others. Community members can support this effort in several ways: - Purchase items directly from the United Way Amazon Wishlist - Make a financial donation - Volunteer to help deliver items to recipients The program is available to Galveston County residents aged 60 and older, with a special focus on those with disabilities or health conditions that can make extreme heat particularly hazardous. Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. United Way also encourages anyone who knows individuals living on the Galveston County mainland who are in need to sign them up for the program through the website or by calling 409-948-4211.
