Tasty waves greet surfing dogs for 12th year in Galveston More than 30 dogs took to the surf to “Hang 18” for the 12th Ohana Surf Dog Competition in Galveston on Saturday (7/19/2025). The annual event, raising funds for the Galveston Island Humane Society, drew more than 100 spectators, including a miniature horse named Horsefly who came to the beach to cheer on the furry surfers and was an honorary judge. Tom Celcer, the owner of Q, a border collie who competed in this year's competition, traveled from the Hill Country to compete. Q made it to the finals last year and started her surfing journey at Canyon Lake. "I took her to Canyon Lake, put her on a boogie board, and started pushing her out," Celcer said. Q did her best, but in the end Poopie, a surfing Chihuahua from Southern Spears Surf Shop won the day. Kristen Thompson, the Humane Society’s executive director, said in addition to raising funds for the island’s shelter, the organization was able to sell merchandise and highlight animals available for adoption. FACTOID: Most dogs have 18 toes, thus referencing Hang 18.
