Texas City battles large mulch fire on city’s north side • Galveston FD sends crews to back up TC fire houses Every available firefighter and apparatus of the Texas City Fire Department was on the scene of a mulch fire on a city material yard on the city’s north side Sunday (3/9/2025). Texas City Fire Chief Dennis Harris said every department member was fighting the mulch blaze in the 3300 block of Loop 197. The fire was reported at about 4 PM. The area is located across Loop 197 from the Texas City Biosphere and near the city’s massive flood control screw pumps. No structures or residential areas were at risk by the fire, officials said. The Galveston Fire Department sent crews to staff the Texas City fire stations. Harris noted that mulch pile fires are a challenge for fire crews. Some are known to burn for days. They also can start via spontaneous combustion. This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
