Asian troupe surprises Galveston Farmers Market with lunar new year lion dance Customers and visitors to Galveston’s Own Farmers Market were treated to a surprise performance by a troupe of Asian American lion dancers on Sunday, February 9, 2025. The group performed in vibrant costumes, each containing two dancers exhibiting movements inspired by lions. The performers were rewarded by an enthusiastic response from the large audience. The Lion Dancers of Houston's Huyen Quang Center were there to continue the celebration of Lunar New Year, which arrived as the Year of the Snake on January 29, 2025. In many cultures, new years are also associated with an animal from the zodiac. Often the animals are the same across different Asian countries, including China, South Korea, North Korea, Singapore and Cambodia. The dance also celebrates the coming of spring and is said to bring good luck. HUYEN QUANG CENTER info@huyenquang.org
