Don’t Let the Freeze Leave You on Thin Ice — Here's How To Prepare: With an approaching winter blast set to hit the Galveston County area in the upcoming days, Chalmers Hardware in Galveston is stepping up to help residents prepare their homes for the cold snap. General Manager Sherry Farmer shares advice and highlights these essential items during an interview at the shop. Farmer emphasized the urgency of protecting exposed pipes and faucets, noting that these are common trouble spots during severe weather. “After a hard freeze like the one we’re expecting, we see everyone coming in with busted outdoor faucets. It’s avoidable if you prepare now,” she said. “We have pipe insulation and foam faucet covers right at the door when you walk in,” said Farmer. Other recommended items include air conditioner covers to block drafts from window units and turbine covers for roofs. While these products don’t address freezing, they help keep homes warmer during extreme weather conditions. A Colorado transplant, Farmer also shared her personal strategy for protecting indoor plumbing. “Last time we had a hard freeze, I turned all my faucets on trickle before I left for work. You want to use cold water because hot water freezes faster. After my morning shower, I ran only cold water through the pipes to make sure they weren’t still hot,” she explained. With temperatures expected to plunge, Farmer urged locals to take these precautions immediately. “You have between now and Sunday to get everything covered. It’s simple, but it makes a huge difference.” Chalmers Hardware remains a reputable source for Galveston residents seeking freeze-prep essentials. Ms. Farmer would like everyone to know they are open 7 days a week, including from 8AM to 4PM on Sunday. They also have an ACE Hardware store within. She asks that everyone cover their plants and bring any pets inside.
