17-year-old dead after inadvertently shot by brother in east Texas City; father dies after medical episode while trying to save son UPDATED: 3:30 PM • 15-year-old questioned by police, released to mom’s custody • Galveston County DA is also investigating the shooting Texas City police overnight Monday (1/13/2025) responded to a tragic scene in which a teen was shot by his brother, and the boys’ father died after suffering a medical episode while trying to save his wounded son, Chief Landis Cravens said. The shooting happened at about 1:20 AM in the 300 block of 10th Avenue in Texas City. Initial information from detectives is that a 15-year-old had a weapon, and it inadvertently discharged, striking his 17-year-old brother Joshua Gonzalez. The boys’ father, Julian Gonzalez, 41, ran into the room and was attempting to save the 17-year-old when the dad had a medical issue and collapsed. The father died from an unconfirmed medical issue. The teen died from the shooting. Detective Jeff Winstead said the 15-year-old was questioned by police and released to his mother's custody. Winstead said the district attorney would decide whether to charge the 15-year-old. Police did not release information on the type of weapon used in the shooting, how the 15-year-old was able to get the gun, or who owned the firearm. Julian “Jay” Gonzalez was a popular tattoo artist who operated Artistic Image Tattoo Studio in Texas City. His son, Joshua, played baseball and football at Texas City High School and was also a party disc jockey who dubbed himself DJ Gordo Sexy.
