8 units destroyed in Webster apartment fire • Firefighter trapped in burning unit escapes through window Firefighters from 8 area fire departments battled a roaring apartment fire in near-freezing weather Saturday (1/11/2025) in Webster. The blaze at the Harbour Point Apartments, 16460 State Highway 3, was reported at about 5:50 AM, but as fire crews arrived, it was evident the fire was raging before the 911 calls came in, said Webster Battalion Chief Anthony Pearson. Pearson said fire crews from the Webster, Nassau Bay, Friendswood, League City, Seabrook, Dickinson, Houston, and Forest Bend fire departments were able to contain the blaze to one apartment building. The fire was brought under control around 7:45 AM. Still, all 8 apartment units were destroyed. Pearson said no one was injured, and there were no reports of missing or deceased pets. Edith Williams was among those who lost her apartment and everything inside. She said one of her two adult sons woke her up to say flames were near the water heater. As they escaped, neighboring residents also got out of their apartments. Williams, who celebrated her 67th birthday on Wednesday, said she moved into her unit three months ago. The only possessions she had was what she was wearing while asleep. Pearson said the American Red Cross was contacted and was expected to be on-site around 10 AM to help displaced residents. Calls to the Harbour Point leasing office went to voicemail. Pearson said it appears the fire started in one of the lower units. By the time the first fire truck arrived, the blaze had spread to the building's attic. While all firefighters were accounted for and not injured, a mayday call was issued when a firefighter got lost in a smoke-filled lower-floor apartment during the primary search for residents. The firefighter managed to get out of the apartment through a window, Pearson said. The firefighter wasn’t injured. Pearson said the Webster fire marshal was on the scene to try and determine what caused the blaze. When the blaze was first reported, temperatures were between 34 degrees and 36 degrees. Luckily, the wind gusts that had been present for the last several days were not an issue during the firefight.
