Daylong search and recovery ends after Port of Galveston officials confirmed the identity of the man killed after his truck drove off the end of Pier 20 and sunk in the Galveston Harbour on Friday (12/27/2024). Cameron Sharman's 1999 Dodge Pickup was pulled from the water around 7 p.m. on Friday. Sharman is believed to have been the only occupant of the truck. Port of Galveston Police, with the help of the Galveston Police Department and Galveston County Sheriff’s Department dive teams, recovered a truck and the body of a La Marque man from the waters of the Galveston Ship Channel Friday night after a nearly 7-hour search. Port of Galveston police were alerted to a possible vehicle in the water Friday morning when Galveston scenic photographer Michael Hawks saw skid marks and damage to the bulkhead of Pier 20. Hawks called the Harbormaster to alert them about the finding. Port of Galveston Police arrived on the scene shortly after reviewing security video and confirmed that a pickup truck had driven off the pier after 2 a.m. Friday. After an initial search, police used underwater sonar to confirm that a vehicle was located in the ship channel, about 29 feet deep. The Galveston Police Department assisted in the search and found the truck. By that time, a cruise ship was scheduled to depart from the nearby Pier 25 terminal, and as a matter of safety, the dive team was pulled from the water. A Galveston County Sheriff’s Office dive team was also called to assist. Once the cruise ship departed, the dive teams could secure straps for the truck. At about 6:30 PM, straps were secured to the truck, which was pulled from the water. The cause of the fatal crash is under investigation. Pier 20 is an open pier and allows public access. The roadway leading up to the pier has parking on both sides for those visiting the Ocean Star oil rig museum and nearby Katie's Seafood.
