Moody Gardens secures birds after bird flu detected in Texas City waterfowl Following the confirmation of a waterfowl in Texas City having Avian Influenza/Bird Flu, Moody Gardens, which has dozens of birds as part of its Rainforest Pyramid announced precautionary moves to keep the exotic birds safe. *Notification - Avian Flu Protocol* Due to the recent notice of Avian Flu diagnosis within 50 miles of our facility, Moody Gardens is taking appropriate steps to mitigate exposure to our animal population within the Rainforest Pyramid. • Macaws were removed from perched areas and will not be on exhibit in the Rainforest Pyramid. • Service animals will not be allowed into this exhibit to appropriately mitigate at-risk services. • Guests entering the Rainforest Pyramid will be required to stop at a sanitization station where aerosolized ammonia spray will be applied to their shoes and wheels of wheelchairs and strollers. The moves were made after a sickly waterfowl was found near the Emmett F Lowry Expressway on Dec. 4. The bird, which health officials now say the breed can’t be confirmed, died after it was picked up by Texas City Animal Control Officers.
