Texas City City Engineer Kim Golden explains ongoing I-45 construction and its duration Texas City residents are seeing progress in the $230 million expansion of Interstate 45, as key intersections reopen ahead of the holiday season. While the construction is a state-led initiative by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the city has been closely monitoring updates. The current phase of the expansion, which spans from FM 517 to FM 1764, is set to finish in approximately 18 months. “This is not a city project but a TxDOT project,” clarified Kim Golden, Texas City’s city engineer. “TxDOT has been very good about keeping us informed." The project aims to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and enhance safety while preparing for the ongoing development in the area. This portion includes adding new travel lanes, upgrading frontage roads, and improving overpasses for connectivity between local streets and the interstate. Recent developments include the reopening of several critical crossings, including Holland Road, Lago Mar Boulevard, and Central Park Boulevard, near popular destinations like Buc-ee’s and Tanger Outlets. “These openings will ease travel in the area, especially during the busy holiday shopping season,” Golden said. “We’re excited to see people out and about, visiting stores, spending time with family, and enjoying Texas City.” For now, the reopened crossings promise to alleviate some traffic headaches as the community looks forward to a more efficient and connected transportation network.
