Libby Wheeler and Austin Gace's engagement is unlike many other young couple's. After Libby's father, William Wheeler, suffered a stroke back on September 10th of this year, the couple has stepped up to take care of Mr. Wheeler during his rehabilitation - as well as the household. Libby's mother, Miranda Wheeler, could not be more blessed, she says. The Wheeler family did not expect Mr. Wheeler to make it this far. Beyond having the maturity to ask Mr. Wheeler for permission to marry his daughter, Miranda is thankful for Austin's ability to sustain the household during this time. The 21 and 20 year old duo work together to cover Mr. Wheeler's medical costs and the small tasks that leave Mrs. Wheeler exhausted. Having dated for four years, and lived together for almost one year, the pair is in no rush for the ceremony, slotting the wedding for Crawfish Season in 2026. "We're a Cajun family," Libby says. Austin did not object to eating crawfish at his wedding. The Santa Fe and Hitchcock High school alumni have since become advocates for stroke symptom awareness. If you suspect someone you know is experiencing a stroke, Mrs. Wheeler suggests you ask the individual to stick out their tongue. If the tongue begins to move from left to right, call emergency services immediately (911). The Wheeler-Gace's will continue working together during this holiday season; as Austin notes, love grows over time, "you don't just have it right off the bat."
