Conveyer on old grain elevators at Port of Galveston catches fire during demolition Demolition crews using torches to dismantle the old grain elevators at the Port on Galveston accidentally caught a conveyor belt on fire Saturday afternoon. The crew was cutting away pieces of the former Archer Daniel Midland grain elevators and silos when a torch caught a piece of a conveyer on fire, Galveston Assistant Fire Chief Jarod Hutson said. While the fire was small, its location, six stories in the air and at a difficult spot, made it too dangerous for the demo crew to use a fire extinguisher to knock out the flames. A Galveston Fire Department Ladder Crew was able to get to the spot and knock down the flames. Hutson said the fire was declared out by 3:15 PM. No one was injured, but those driving on Harborside Drive and cruise ship passengers aboard a Carnival cruise ship could watch dark black smoke bellow upward from the fire. The port is spending about $3.5 million on demolishing the 15.5-acre ADM site at Piers 30, 31, 32, and 33 to make more room for the Galveston Wharves' ever-expanding wind turbine imports for wind farms in the Midwest and Canada.
