“Dirty Dancing” star Jennifer Grey reflects on her career during Galveston Women’s Conference Friday (9/13/2024) was a day to celebrate women’s empowerment, entrepreneurship and taking action in the community. The Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce welcomed more than 2,000 attendees for the 17th Galveston Women’s Conference. The keynote address from actress Jennifer Grey highlighted the day-long conference. Moody Gardens Convention Center was converted into a mountain lodge inspired by Grey’s role as Baby in “Dirty Dancing,” a role that Grey, 67, said amazes her that 37 years later still resonates with multiple generations of fans. Grey also spoke of the influence of her father, Tony, and Oscar-winning actor Joel Grey, who is famous for his stage and screen role in “Cabaret.” Jennifer Grey’s appearance was the finale to a day when the conference paid tribute to its women of the year. President and Founder of the Chamber’s County Children’s Museum, Macy Middleton received the Mary Ellen Doyle Legacy Woman of the Year award. Eight women were named Ann McLeod Moody Women of the Year: * Ashley Cordray, Founder, Save 1900 * Jody Droege, Vice President, TDEC, Inc. * Karen Flowers, Broker Associate, Joe Tramonte Realty * Kelly Carnes Johns, PR & Marketing, Carnes Funeral Home * Mary Longoria, Galveston College Board of Regents * Marie Robb, Mayor Pro Tem, Galveston City Council, District 6 * Carolyn Sunseri, Vice President of Administrative Services, Texan Title * Vanessa Wyche, Director, NASA’s Johnson Space Center Presentations were given by bullying prevention advocate and America’s Got Talent breakout singer Kechi Okwuchi and Scout and Cellar wine founder Sarah Shadonix. The conference also featured its first Empow-Her panel, which included Occidental Petroleum CEO Vicki Holub, “Lone Star Law” star Galveston-based Texas Game Warden Jennifer Provaznik, and Dr. Natacha Chough, a NASA flight surgeon and professor for UTMB Health’s Aerospace Medicine program. More than 170 women-owned businesses were also set up in The Market at the conference for shopping.
