Argument over crashed vehicle preceded fatal Glen Cove shooting in League City • Suspect claims woman and her “sugar daddy” threatened to “savage” him The League City man charged in connection to a double shooting Tuesday (8/27/2024) morning in the Glen Cove subdivision told investigators the shooting was in self-defense. Michael Collins, 40, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is in the Galveston County jail on $500,000 bond. He is accused of shooting and wounding a 49-year-old man and could face charges in the fatal shooting of Cassandra Jaramillo, 31. According to a probable cause affidavit used to file the assault charges, Collins, who lives at the house in the 1900 block of Winn where the shootings happened, told League City detectives he was asleep when Jaramillo arrived and reportedly banged on sliding glass doors of the house. Despite telling her to leave, Collins said she threatened to throw a brick through a window. Collins told police that he and Jaramillo had a casual relationship and that the night before, the pair were in a borrowed vehicle when they were involved in a crash. The pair dropped off the car at a local dealership. They returned to Collins’ house, where he claims Jaramillo berated him and said the owner of the vehicle, named Jason, also made threats to “make (Collins) disappear” or get Collins sent back to prison. Eventually, Jaramillo left the house but returned demanding the keys to the vehicle. Collins told detectives that during the argument, he noticed his dog had gotten out, and he went outside to find his pit bull. Collins had earlier described Jason as Jaramillo’s “sugar daddy,” “muscle” and “driver.” That is when Jason pulled up in a truck and demanded the keys to the crashed vehicle. Collins said the keys were inside with Jaramillo and continued searching for his dog. Collins said he returned to the house and found Jaramillo and Jason in the bedroom. According to the affidavit, Collins told detectives that Jaramillo was holding a kitchen knife, “amping Jason up,” and that the man “bulldogged” him. Collins grabbed a handgun, which did little to concern Jaramillo or Jason, who continued to challenge him, Collins told investigators. At some point, Jaramillo reportedly called Collins a “bitch,” after which he admitted to detectives that he fired off a shot, killing Jaramillo. Collins said he “saw Jason’s eyes get wide, and Jason paused,” detectives reported. That’s when he fired three to four times, striking Jason in the chest. Asked why he felt he had to shoot the man, Collins told detectives he didn’t want Jason to rush him. Collins reportedly told police that neither Jaramillo nor Jason ever physically moved toward him. First Assistant District Attorney Kayla Allen said the case remains under investigation, and if warranted, further charges could be forthcoming. Galveston County court records show that Collins has reached plea agreements of being convicted in 15 felony cases ranging from drug crimes to assault. Authorities, too, said while less than a block from the location of a shooting of a Clear Lake Shores police officer in early August, the shootings Tuesday do not appear connected.
