16-year-olds charged with murder of Dickinson High School junior UPDATED: Ages of suspects confirmed, formal charges presented Dickinson police, with the assistance of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, took into custody two teens who are considered responsible for the shooting death of Hayden Beck, 16, of Bacliff. The pair were taken into custody on Tuesday (8/27/2024) afternoon. The 16-year-olds were taken to the Galveston County Juvenile Justice Center, where they were held before they - along with their parents/guardians - went before a judge on Wednesday (8/28/2024). Both will be charged with murder. Because both are juveniles, Texas law prevents authorities from releasing details of the hearing. It was unconfirmed whether the judge ordered the pair to remain at the juvenile detention center or be released into the custody of their parents/guardians. Under Texas law, juvenile suspects must appear before a juvenile court judge before being charged with a felony crime. Beck, a Dickinson High School junior, was shot multiple times as he drove on Sunday (8/25/2024). Beck was behind the wheel of a blue Ford crossover/sedan driving east on Green Lee Lane when residents reported hearing multiple gunshots. When the Ford stopped in a driveway in the 2900 block of Timber Drive, witnesses told police they saw three people get out and run away from the scene. Authorities confirmed that two of those who ran off were the ones charged. The third person doesn't face charges. It is unconfirmed if that person is also a juvenile. Given that all involved are juveniles, police said they were restricted from releasing more details on the investigation. Kacey Launius, the chief of the juvenile crimes division for the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, said she would decide after police finish their investigation whether to seek to have the 16-year-olds certified by the judge as adults
