Galveston County property owners have until October 21 to take advantage of a temporary disaster exemption "This is an excellent way for homeowners to get relief," said Krystal McKinney, Chief Appraiser at Galveston Central Appraisal District. As of early this week, fewer than 40 people have applied for the appraisal, which applies only to qualified property. Among included property are business personal property, and mobile homes used as a dwelling. Property owners will have 105 days to file for the exemption under Tax Code 11.35, which allows a chief appraiser to determine if property does qualify for the temporary exemption based on damage assessment. The exemption comes into play only when Texas Governor Greg Abbott declares an emergency in the county. Those impacted by Hurricane Beryl qualify, and with the peak of hurricane season looming, McKinney hopes property owners will not have begin the countdown toward applying for the exemption again. "I'm just hoping for a quiet rest of the season," she said. To apply for the exemption, visit the Galveston County Central Appraisal District's website and complete Form 50-312 and return via mail (9850 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite A, Texas City TX 77591), email at gcad@galvestoncad.org or drop it off in person to the office during normal business hours.
