Detectives try to piece together shooting that killed 16-year-old Dickinson ISD student UPDATED 9 AM • Grief and mental health counselors available on Dickinson High School campus after fatal shooting The Galveston County Medical Examiner says a 16-year-old Dickinson High School student was shot multiple times before the car he was driving crashed into vehicles in a driveway on Sunday (8/25/2024). Dickinson Police Detectives are still trying to determine what led to the fatal shooting of Hayden Beck, a Dickinson High School junior from Bacliff. Beck was behind the wheel of a Ford crossover/sedan driving east on Green Lee Lane when residents reported hearing multiple gunshots. When the Ford stopped in a driveway in the 2900 block of Timber Drive, witnesses told police they saw three people get out and run away from the scene. In doing so, they left behind their mobile phones. Police have not yet confirmed if the gunfire came from outside or within the vehicle. Given that the victim is a juvenile and those who were in the car may also be juveniles, police are not releasing any more details on the investigation. That despite an armed suspect or suspects are not in custody. Police also did not have solid descriptions of the suspects or the persons who fled the scene. His aunt, Renee Ponton, said Beck was a “straight A student” who also took College of the Mainland dual credit courses. Pontoon, who was married a few weeks ago, provided a photo of her and Beck together from the wedding. Dickinson ISD Communications Director Tammy Dowdy confirmed a Dickinson ISD student was involved in the fatal shooting. She said grief and mental health counselors are available for students or staff needing assistance. The shooting happened at around 3:20 PM on Sunday. The investigation continued well into the night, and the scene wasn't cleared until almost 10 PM. Family members said Beck’s mother didn't find out her son was killed until she drove to the scene herself. Crime scene technicians and the Galveston County Medical Examiner were on the scene for almost seven hours before it was cleared. As crime scene technicians from the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office checked the vehicle for evidence, it appeared there were at least two bullet holes in the driver’s side windshield of the car. Residents who live on Green Lee Lane Cul de Sac were told their street was part of the crime scene, and they were held back for several hours, unable to return home. Anyone with information about the fatal shooting should call Dickinson police at (281) 337-4700.
