Korean War memorial in Galveston honors 51 Galveston County fallen warriors A Korean War memorial was unveiled in Galveston on Friday (9/16/2022). This came 69 years after the war ended in 1953. This was built in honor of the 51 Galveston County fallen soldiers of all branches killed in action in the Korean War. This date was chosen because of its association with the Inchon Landing launched against the North Koreans on September 15, 1950. Galveston County Marine Corps League, Detachment 668, launched the effort to build this memorial in 2019. Three years later, on Memorial Day, May 30, 2022, the project was completed. “I’m glad to have it complete. It was a lot of work,” said Doug McLeod with the Galveston County Marine Corps League, Detachment 668. McLeod talked about multiple factors delaying the final piece, including researching some names that were missing from the roster. “The Korean War is the forgotten war,” said McLeod in regards to why it is important to recognize this part of history. Consul General for Consulate General of the Republic of Korea Nyung-Soo Ahn talked about his first impression of the memorial. He was interested in how this one was specifically dedicated to the 51 soldiers from the area. “I’ve seen many in other areas and I am really happy to see the newest one in Galveston,” said Ahn. 2 1/2 years ago, Ahn came to Houston. When he arrived, he realized that most Korean War veterans were in their 90s. He started to contact them and continues to attend the monthly meetings involving them. The monument was placed at Anico Plaza on 20th Street between Mechanic/Market Streets in Galveston.
