Rain-delayed Reedy Chapel Juneteenth fest worth the wait Originally planned for June 19, 2024, rain and areas of high water on Galveston Island forced a delay of the traditional Juneteenth celebration at historic Reedy Chapel AME Church. It was instead rescheduled for today (6/29/2024). Festival attendees enjoyed food, music, bounce-houses, drumming and more. Those not dancing or shooting hoops under the sunny skies were chilling in the shade with sno-cones. Sharon Batiste Gillins, Trustee at Historic Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, explained that the location was key to the history of Juneteenth. It was the site where newly-freed slaves in Texas celebrated their emancipation for the first time. Gillins said that it was important to include young people in the festivities. “If they are not involved, if they don’t understand what the celebration of emancipation is all about, they will not continue this celebration,” she said.
