Galveston Beach Patrol Chief urges caution for safe 4th of July Chief Peter Davis of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol urges beach-goers to exercise caution when visiting the island for the Fourth of July holiday. As always, says the chief, swim near a lifeguard and avoid swimming near such structures as piers or jetties. In addition, now that the area is in the dog days of summer, visitors should stay well hydrated and protect themselves from the sun as much as possible. Davis said that the beach patrol has already received a regular stream of calls for heat related illnesses on the beachfront. “Don’t check your brain at the causeway,” said Davis. “Use your good situational awareness when you come down.”
