Affidavit: League City man charged in father’s murder was experiencing a mental health crisis at time of the shooting • Suspect’s mother said her son had been in and out of the hospital in recent days after “seeing and hearing things” The probable cause affidavit used to charge Raymond Jeremiah Stoney, 43, with the murder of his father, Raymond Stoney, on June 8 at the family’s League City house quotes the suspect’s mother as telling police her son had been in and out of the hospital for three days after “seeing and hearing things that were not there.” Margie Stoney told police that just before. After the fatal shooting, her son “started to run around in the backyard as if something was chasing him.” Raymond Jeremiah Stoney remains in the Galveston County Jail on a $250,000 bond. In charging documents, League City Police Department Detective Brittnee Demasi said Mrs. Stoney said she and her husband were seeking help for their son when he had episodes of “talking to people that were not there while not acknowledging people that were there.” The couple took their son to Methodist Hospital (Clear Lake) for three straight days, and he was released each time. She did not indicate if the hospital reached out or referred the family to any mental health intervention specialists. Medical facilities often struggle with adult patients experiencing mental health crises because most aren’t equipped to provide the mental health services needed, and the patients can refuse treatment. Houston Methodist officials did not respond to questions submitted by email early Friday morning about the hospital’s procedures in handling patients who are experiencing a mental health crisis. The hospital system, which has a hospital in Nassau Bay and a clinic in League, boasts of its bahvorial health center located in the Texas Medical Center. The charging documents do not specify which of the Houston Methodist facilities the Stoney’s took their adult son. During his appearance before Magistrate Judge Steven Baker on Sunday, Raymond Jeremiah Stoney did not answer any of the judge’s questions. Since he was appearing via video conference from the jail's medical ward, it was hard to see Stoney’s face or tell if he had any reaction to the judge. According to the affidavit, Stoney’s mother said her son was not responding to people as they talked to him.
