Juneteenth to be celebrated locally and worldwide Galveston, considered the birthplace of Juneteenth, will host several events in celebration of the historic occasion when all slaves were declared free. Commemorations, festivals and more will take place on the island through June 20, 2024. These will include the 10th Annual Juneteenth Gala on June 13, the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Galveston Minority Business Empowerment Summit on June 14 and Juneteenth Festival & Celebration on June 15. Events on June 19 will include the 45th Annual Juneteenth Proclamation Reading at Ashton Villa at 10 AM. The traditional Emancipation March from the old Galveston Courthouse to historic Reedy Chapel three blocks away will begin at 6 PM. Full breakdown of all Galveston Juneteenth events: Thursday (6/13/2024) is the 10th Annual Juneteenth Gala at Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway, from 6:30-9 PM. Friday (6/14/2024) is the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Galveston Minority Business Empowerment Summit. It will be at the Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Avenue M, from 11 AM-3 PM. Friday is also the Juneteenth Scholarship Gala. This will be at the Victorian, 6300 Seawall Boulevard, from 7-10 PM. Friday night is the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Comedy Fest. This will be at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Boulevard, from 7-11:30 PM. Saturday (6/15/2024) kicks off with the Juneteenth Festival & Celebration at McGuire Dent Rec Center, 2222 28th Street, from Noon-8 PM. Also on Saturday, the Juneteenth Parade & Picnic will start at 2601 Avenue H and make its way to the Wright Cuney Park. The parade is from 1-2 PM, followed by a picnic at the park from 2-5 PM Saturday night, the 4th Annual B.L.V.D. Juneteenth Sidewalk Poetry Show will be at The Proletarian Gallery and Public House, 2221 Market Street from 8-10:30 PM Over at Moody Gardens, Saturday night is the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Sneaker Ball from 8 PM-1 AM. 4 special showings of Juneteenth: The Galveston Story will happen in the Moody Gardens 3D Theater. It will be on Sunday (6/16/2024) and Wednesday (6/19/2024), with 2 showings each day; 12:45 PM, 4 PM; 45 mins long. Sunday (6/16/2024) will be the Juneteenth Morning Worship Service at Reedy Chapel AME Church, 2015 Broadway, from 11 AM-1 PM. Avenue L Baptist Church will also have their Juneteenth Celebration, late Sunday morning. This will be at 2612 Avenue L, starting at 11 AM. The Juneteenth Concert: Spirit and Soul will be on Sunday, at The Grand 1894 Opera, 2020 Postoffice Street, from 4-6 PM. Monday (6/17/2024) is the Juneteenth Lecture series: Good Black History by Anthony Brogden. This will be at 2217 Strand from Noon to 1 PM. On Tuesday (6/18/2024), there will be a Juneteenth presentation from the Galveston Historical Foundation. It will be at Ashton Villa from 11:30 AM-1 PM. On Juneteenth, Wednesday (6/19/2024), things will get started with the 45th Annual Juneteenth Proclamation Reading in the Ashton Villa Ballroom from 10-11 AM. Followed by that will be the Juneteenth Family Fun Day at Reedy Chapel AME from 1-6 PM. The celebration and remembrance closes out with the Emancipation March, starting at Reedy Chapel AME at 6 PM.
