Judge gives Hitchcock murderer 30 years in state prison; pled guilty A 20-year-old man pled guilty on Friday (5/17/2024) to his role in the April 2021 Murder of Cody Gilpin, 17, in Hitchcock. In lieu of Dylon Derrell Williams’ guilty plea, 10th District Court Judge Kerry Neves sentenced him to 30 years in state prison. On April 13, 2021, Gilpin’s body was found near the FM 2004 entrance of Jack Brook’s Park. He was shot several times. In court records, investigators claim that Gilpin was meeting up with Williams to purchase a gun. Snapchat messages retrieved from one of Gilpin’s phones led investigators to Williams, who was arrested at his home in La Marque. Investigators said that security video from Hitchcock’s Head Start campus, which is across the street from the park entrance, captured the murder. A car that was later found to be registered to Williams’ mother pulled into the entrance of Jack Brooks Park and soon after, Gilpin - who rode his bicycle to the park - approached the car. The video captured Gilpin running away from the car before collapsing in the area where his body was found later that morning. The driver of the vehicle is shown walking up to where Gilpin had fallen to the ground, and someone from the passenger side of the car also steps up to Gilpin’s body. A search of that car later uncovered a 40 caliber bullet casing that was located beneath the hood near a windshield wiper. Investigators found 40 caliber and 9MM casings at the murder scene on April 13. The casings at the scene matched the one in the car, the affidavit reads. DNA also linked Williams to Gilpin’s death as it appears someone rifled through Gilpin’s pockets before leaving the scene. That DNA was a match to Williams, according to the affidavit. Co-defendant, Andrew Matthew Smith, 19, has his trial date set for July 1, 2024.
