Galveston islanders sound off after Barkley, dirty water comment After Charles Barkley said that the New Orleans Pelicans should be sent to Galveston where there is “dirty water,” instead of Cancun, some islanders had their fun at punching back. “Charles Barkley is full of it,” Island Attorney, Roberto Torres said. “We know that Galveston is not perfect, but we are proud of it,” said Mackenzie Finklea, PR Manager for Visit Galveston. Barkley made his comment after the New Orleans Pelicans got swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Playoffs. “We’re not even going to send them to Cancun, we’re going to send them to Galveston with that dirty a** water,” Barkley said on TNT. It is important to note that the water is not dirty, but muddy. Finklea explained that the water changes colors because of the sediment in the beach front and water that comes from the Mississippi River. “The sand beneath the water is not going to reflect as blue from the sky like other beaches.” Visit Galveston took to social media in a post that read, “Charles Barkley, here I was thinking we were cool, and then you go throwing shade like we're strangers. What's up with that?” Island Famous restaurant “The Spot,” put up a sign that read “Don’t be a shady beach Charles Barkley.” Byrd remembered Barkley eating at The Spot in the 90s, when the Houston Rockets had training camp on the island. “We know he was trying to make a joke so we took a jab,” Byrd added. Marketing Director for Moody Gardens, Jerri Hamachek said that it has probably been a long time since Barkley has paid the island a visit, and that he should come down and reevaluate. Moody Gardens has Palm Beach, which offers blue water like Barkley prefers. There are also many hotels and spots that offer it like at the San Luis Resort, Float, Nick’s Kitchen and Beach Bar, and more.
