UTMB Active Shooter Drill to use gunshot simulations Residents near the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston campus are advised that an active shooter drill will be held in the vicinity of the UTMB School of Nursing from 7 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, April 6, 2024. This will be a multi-agency, large-action, active shooter drill. Simulated gunshot sounds will be used, but are not expected to be heard outside of the building. The event is co-sponsored by the UTMB Police Department and the Interprofessional Education Program. The exercise is intended as training for police, fire and emergency medical personnel, as well as for medical and nursing students at UTMB. Simulated, all-volunteer victims will be transported to mock emergency rooms as part of the training. "It's important for the nursing students and staff to understand what they would do in this type of situation," said Captain Laura Barrett, of the UTMB Police Department. She explained that multiple emergency drills are held on campus each year.
