Dayton Andre Booker found guilty of Murder in fatal Texas City bar beating • Faces 5-99 years in state prison A jury of 6 men and 6 women found Dayton Andre Booker guilty of Murder in the fatal Diamond Jim’s bar beating in Texas City in May 2021. After roughly 1 hour of deliberating, the verdict was returned Thursday morning (3/21/2024), in the 122nd District Court with Judge Jeth Jones, presiding. The jury now holds the fate of his life in their hands, as they decide how long he will spend in state prison. Booker faces 5-99 years. On May 22, 2021, five men; Dayton Andre Booker, Taylor Christopher Requenes, Christopher Daniel Gomez, Ashton Lee Coleman, and Antonio Marcus Figueroa beat Danny Sanders Sr., 65, to death. All five were arrested and charged with Murder. Taylor Requenes was the first to see trial, and was given 16 years in prison in late October 2023. Dayton Booker was the second to be on trial for the murder of Sanders. The beating came after an accusation from Booker’s half sister Elexus May, who said Sanders sexually assaulted her nearly a decade ago. Sanders was her babysitter from ages 7-10 and a relative through marriage. Sanders was never charged of sexually assaulting her, according to court officials. Sanders was convicted in 2009 for lewd sexual contact with his 14-year-old daughter. Records show he was given time served and then probation as well as required to be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life. On May 22, 2021, the five men followed Sanders, who appeared to be heading to his car to leave, and beat him to death in the parking lot of Diamond Jim’s. During Wednesday’s (3/20/2024) closing arguments, Prosecutor Barbara Agbu argued that Booker and the men decided to “play God.” She said that there is a justice system in Galveston County, and all that commit crimes should face it through the court system. Booker’s Defense Attorney John Powell tried arguing that while Booker was there and cut off Sanders, Taylor Requenes was the one who beat Sanders to death.
