Haney given probation in negligent homicide • Haney will have to spend a day in jail on the anniversary date of the fatal crash next four years After 8 1/2 hours of deliberation, a jury of 6 men and 6 women reached a compromise by sentencing Dee Ann Haney to 10 years confinement, but probating that sentence. So while Haney will be on probation, should she have her probation revoked she would go to prison, likely for the full 10 year sentence. She was also fined $20,000. As part of Haney’s probation conditions, she will have to spend a full day in the Galveston County Jail on the anniversary of the fatal crash for the next four years. Haney will also not be allowed to drive a vehicle until such time as a medical board clears her for operating a vehicle. During the trial it was revealed that she suffers from epilepsy and takes medication to avoid seizures. Haney said she was trying to gather her thoughts as she sat at the defense table filling out paperwork. This decision came Friday (2/23/2024) afternoon in the Impact Court with visiting Judge Leslie Brock Yates. Prosecutor Kacey Launius said they were disappointed as she felt prison was the “appropriate punishment given the harm Haney has done to the Le family.” Through an attorney, the Le family declined to comment on the sentencing. Their civil attorney Nooman Husain did not respond to requests for comment. Tommy Nguyen, brother-in-law of Duoc and uncle of Hong, who was a witness to the fatal crash, also declined an on camera interview. On the phone he did say the family was disappointed, sad and considered the sentence to be a “slap on the wrist.” When asked in the hallway if she wanted to comment on the sentencing, Haney continued to look down and walk towards the elevator. Haney was convicted of Criminally Negligent Homicide using her truck as a deadly weapon, last Friday (2/16/2024). This derived from a July 3, 2017, fatal crash where Van Duoc Le, 58, and his son Hong Phuc Le, 33, were both hit and killed on a connector road to the northbound Galveston Causeway.
