King Cakes galore on Galveston Island this Mardi Gras season One of the more popular bites during the Mardi Gras! Galveston season is King Cake. King Cake is a doughy and sugary treat that many can’t wait to sink their teeth into every year. Concetta Maceo Sims of Maceo Spice & Import Company talked about the history of the treat and the best places to pick one up. Some of the best spots are Gypsy Joynt, PattyCakes Bakery, Shykatz, Chef Mary Bass and Maceo Spice & Import Company. Sims said King Cakes started way back when with the Romans, who put a bean in the cake. Those who found the bean were not so lucky, as they were sacrificed. The Catholics changed up the dark narrative and put a little toy baby inside. When one finds the baby, they get to host the next Mardi Gras party. Depending on the shop, you can find flavors varying from lemon blueberry, strawberry cream cheese, sweet cream, pecan praline, cinnamon butter and more. Don’t forget to pick up your King Cake before weekend 2 of Mardi Gras! Galveston comes to an end, this weekend.
