Family of woman who died in Galveston County Jail demands for release of video An in-custody death at the Galveston County Jail overnight Thursday sparked a Friday press conference, where family and friends of the woman who died demanded the release of the security camera footage. Brittany Nicole Anderson, 32, had been in jail since January 24 on a violation of the terms for her release into community supervision. Galveston County Jail officials said Anderson, who had to be physically restrained after running away from deputies, died overnight Thursday (2/1/2024), Sheriff Henry Trochesset confirmed. Friday (2/2/2024), family and friends were led by Quanell X in a press conference in front of the jail, where they told the public that they wanted to see the security video. Footage is being turned over to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, who are investigating Anderson’s death. Trochesset confirmed jailhouse cameras captured the incident, but would not discuss the possible release of the footage because the death is under investigation. He declined to comment Friday after the press conference, as the Texas Department of Public Safety is handling the investigation. An autopsy to confirm Anderson’s cause of death was finished Friday morning. The preliminary results were turned over to the Galveston County District Attorney Jack Roady. Roady said his office would not comment on the cause of death until the full autopsy report is provided. While the cause of death has not yet been publicly released, the immediate family was notified before Friday’s press conference at the jail, medical examiner officials confirmed. The Texas Rangers (DPS) and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office have begun the investigation, DPS’ Public Information Officer Sgt Stephen Woodard said. “The investigation will be forwarded to District Attorney's Office upon completion.” Anderson’s death is the 8th in-custody or jail death since January 2022, according to jail data. Most of the deaths have been illness, county data shows. Anderson’s family called her death “murder.” “They threw my baby away and left her to die,” Anderson’s mother Amanda said. Quanell X claims that sheriff's office officials did not contact family members to update them on what occurred. Anderson leaves behind five children. In 2022, Anderson was charged with Abandoning and Endangering a Child with the intent to return. In 2023, Anderson pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years of supervised community service. Sheriff Henry Trochesset said that on Wednesday (1/31/2024), jailers noticed what they reported was Anderson acting “different” and “oddly.” The deputies were taking Anderson to a padded cell near the jail’s medical center, Trochesset said. That is when Anderson reportedly broke free from the deputies and ran down a hall to the jail's booking area. Several deputies had to restrain her before they were able to get her into handcuffs and take her back to the cell. She was scheduled for a medical evaluation on Thursday (2/1/2024) morning. Several hours after the incident, a jailer on rounds noticed Anderson unresponsive on the floor of the cell. After multiple attempts with CPR, paramedics were able to get a pulse, and EMS took Anderson to UTMB Health’s Trauma Center at John Sealy Hospital. Anderson died a few hours later. Anderson’s death is the second in-custody death at the Galveston County Jail this year. On Tuesday, Rio Shareese Jones, 49, died while in Hospice care at UTMB Health. The medical examiner said he died as a result of kidney failure. Jones had been in the county jail since July 29, 2023, for a parole board warrant. Chief Deputy for corrections Douglas Hudson said Jones had severe health issues and was transported to UTMB Health 10 times since he was jailed in July. DPS and the state jail standards commission are also investigating Jones death.
