COM student wins Mardi Gras poster design contest Zion-Alexander Luerson began dabbling in graphic arts to "test the waters" and see if a career in design was a path worth pursuing. Luerson said she always knew she was a talented artist when it came to putting pencil, pen or marker on a canvas, but transforming that skill to a computer format has expanded the capabilities of her imagination. And, sometimes more importantly, it comes with a delete key. While artists who produce their works on paper, canvas or any other medium must take care to avoid major mistakes in their works, Luerson and the other students at COM can correct their miscues with a few key strokes. As part of COM's graphic arts curriculum, the students enter their creations in contests throughout the semester and Luerson's submission won the 2024 Mardi Gras! Galveston poster contest. Along with the $1,000 grand prize for winning the contest, Luerson's poster will be the featured artwork throughout the duration of Mardi Gras! Galveston. Competing against entries from across the region, the annual contest allows artists to showcase their best two-dimensional or digital/graphic designs highlighting the spirit and revelry of Galveston’s historic 113th-annual celebration. Luerson is on track to graduate in the Fall of 2024 before finishing her collegiate career at Savannah College of Art and Design. After that she hopes to pursue a career in storyboarding or as a children’s book illustrator.
