Galveston SWAT gets into a standoff with man who likely shot himself Galveston police overnight Sunday were in a 3-hour standoff with a man who shot himself and fired several rounds in his apartment. It was about 2:45 AM Sunday when Galveston police received multiple 911 calls about gunfire inside an apartment at the Captain’s Landing Apartments, 3102 69th Street. When police arrived, they found a man inside an apartment on the floor covered in blood. But as officers were about to enter the apartment, the wounded man reportedly brandished a handgun, Detective Sgt. Derek Gaspard said. Officers backed away from the apartment door and called for backup. Initially, officers set up a perimeter and attempted to convince the man to come out on his own or put the handgun away. Instead, he fired off several rounds inside the apartment, Gaspard said. That’s when Galveston SWAT was called to the scene. A standoff with the man lasted three hours when Galveston SWAT eventually went in and took the 77-year-old man into custody. Evidence at the scene indicates that the man - who was the only person inside the apartment - shot himself. He was transported to the trauma center at UTMB Health’s John Sealy Hospital for treatment for his physical injuries. The man, who was not identified by police, was scheduled for a mental health evaluation as well.
