County offers free boat disposal program A program in Galveston County allows those with old and derelict boats to dispose of them at no cost. The Vessel Turn In Program (VTIP) was created in 2015 by Galveston County, who partnered with the Texas General Land Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife. The idea came after 75 boats were in need of removal before Hurricane Ike. That cost the county $250,000, Galveston County Nuisance Abatement Program Manager Garret Foskit said. Since the program began in 2015, around 350 boats have been disposed of properly for $25,000. Foskit said this program has been great for boat owners who need to get rid of their old vessel, but don’t have the financial means to. The VTIP registration flyer said the deadline is January 12, but Foskit said you need to sign up by the last week of January. Your boat must be less than 26 feet long, pre-approved and evaluated prior to the event. When you sign up, the county will come to you and evaluate your boat for disposal. The disposal event will be on February 4-5. You will need to bring your boat to the location, as they will not come pick it up for you. If you sign up, you’ll receive a call a few days before the event. For more information or to register, call 409-766-4516 or 409-766-4512.
