2 dead, one injured after fiery wrong-way crash on Gulf Freeway in League City UPDATE 7 AM: Police unsure which vehicle was going wrong way on interstate Two people were killed after a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle on Interstate 45 South at FM 646 in League City on Saturday (1/6/2024) morning. The crash happened around 3:21 AM. A vehicle was headed north in the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway, causing the crash. A heavy fog hampered driving conditions. League City Public Information Officer initially said that woman and man were in a Toyota sedan traveling north in the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway when the car collided with a Volkswagen. Later Ortega said investigators haven’t been able to confirm which vehicle was driving the wrong way on the freeway. The Toyota was engulfed in flames when officers arrived. The male passenger in the Toyota was killed in the crash. The woman driving the Volkswagen was also killed. She was the only person in her vehicle, Ortega said. The woman behind the wheel of the Toyota was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The crash happened atop the I-45 South overpass at FM 646. A heavy fog made driving conditions much riskier. The main lanes of I-45 South were closed, and traffic was diverted to take the FM 646 exit and remain on the feeder road until FM 517 in Dickinson. This developing story will be updated as more confirmed information becomes available.
