League City officer shoots armed aggravated robbery suspect in Walmart parking lot packed with holiday shoppers UPDATED 4:45 PM An armed man was shot and killed by a League City Police officer Saturday (12/23/2023) afternoon, police authorities confirmed. The shooting happened at about 4 PM when the armed suspect reportedly raised a handgun toward the officer. League City police responded to the Walmart, FM 646 at Interstate 45 after a Flock camera detected a Toyota Corolla that was reported stolen at gunpoint in Houston Saturday morning, League City Public Information Officer Jose Ortega said. When officers found the car, they waited for the suspect to return. When the man did walk towards the car, a League City officer approached the suspect. That’s when the man reportedly raised a handgun. The League City officer fired multiple times, striking the man in the chest. Officers performed CPR on the man, but he died at the scene. The officer was physically okay, and no one else in the parking lot was injured on a super busy holiday shopping day. Ortega said a handgun was recovered at the scene. As is a procedure, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The officer will also be placed on paid leave and receive counseling during the investigation, which is also policy for the League City Police Department. Neither the names of the officer nor the man who was shot were released Saturday afternoon. This developing story will be updated as more confirmed information becomes available.
