Galveston Urban Ministries breaks ground for facility Galveston Urban Ministries purchased a vacant building and 2.8-acre tract of land on 69th Street back in 2017 and six years later broke ground on what will eventually serve as a training and retreat center for the community. As a means to centralize their efforts and more efficiently serve the community, GUM Executive Director Josh Dorrell has been working on plans for the facility with Paradigm Construction and Mark W. Todd Architects. Dorrell said the nearly 18,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, but weather and other delays could impact that timeline. The venue will serve numerous purposes, Dorrell said. It will have the capacity to house up to 100 people in addition to providing training for unemployed or underemployed residents. It will also generate revenue for the organization, he said, as an event center that can be rented out for conferences and other gatherings. The Moody Foundation donated $2 million toward the final cost of the center, and Dorrell said $3.8 million of the nearly $5 million total has already been raised through donations from churches, organizations and individuals.
