Descendants of Charles Dickens arrive for 50th Dickens on the Strand Descendants of legendary author, Charles Dickens, have been a staple of Galveston’s Dickens on the Strand celebration since its inception in 1973. Nine of them will be present this year to take part in the 50th anniversary event. Mark Charles Dickens is the great, great grandson of Charles Dickens. The current head of the Dickens Family, he has participated in most of the festivals for about a quarter of a century. His son, Ollie, started attending the event since the age of four. He now has taken the reins from his father and is now a favorite with festival-goers. According to Will Wright, Chief Creative Officer of the Galveston Historical Foundation, the Golden Jubilee will include many special events. These include the Golden Ticket, champagne toast aboard the 1877 tall ship Elissa, Strand walking tours, daily parades, whimsical whiskers review and facial hair contest, Victorian bed races and costume contests, after-event Vaudeville shows and breakfast with Dickens descendants. The event will take place, as always, on Galveston’s historic Strand. Hours are 10 am - 8:30 pm Saturday, Dec. 2, and noon to 5:30 Sunday. Dec. 3. Sponsored on i45NOW by Visit Galveston.
