Narcan dispenser now available at county jail Gulf Coast Outreach Services has placed 15 Narcan dispensers at numerous locations throughout Galveston County, with the most recent placed in the lobby of the Galveston County Jail. Representatives from numerous non-profit organizations involved in the ongoing battle against fentanyl poisonings attended a short press conference Wednesday (11/8/2023) at the jail, 5700 Ball Street, in Galveston. Les McColgin, himself a former opioid abuser of more than 40 years, has continued his battle against fentanyl poisoning and overdoses by founding Gulf Coast Outreach Services. But McColgin isn't fighting the fentanyl issue on his own. Along with McColgin, several non-profit organizations have teamed with GCOS. Ray Nolen with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, was among those who spoke about their experiences over the years dealing with fentanyl issues throughout his career in law enforcement. The dispenser was placed outside of the exit to the jail, where Nolen's hope was that family members visiting an incarcerated person will pick up a dose of Narcan. McColgin said 209 doses of Narcan have been distributed through the dispensers in the past month, which increases the likelihood that lives will be saved. Representatives from the Galveston County Health District said there were 32 fentanyl-related deaths in 2022 throughout the county and 26 so far this year, with less than two months remaining in 2023. McColgin also announced the completion of the Gulf Coast Outreach Services phone app - available for both Android and iPhone platforms. The app has a map that indicates the location of Narcan dispensers.
