2 dead after motorcycle crashes into Uber vehicle in San Leon UPDATED: Tuesday, 8/15/2023 2:45 PM A man and woman died from injuries sustained in a crash on FM 517 Saturday (8/12/2023) night. It was about 8 PM when first responders responded to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of FM 517 and 22nd St in San Leon. The preliminary findings of the crash investigation indicate the motorcycle was traveling East on FM 517 at a high rate of speed when a dark-colored Kia Sorento tried turning west from 22nd Street onto FM 517. That’s when the motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side of the Kia. The speed limit on that section of FM 517 is 50MPH, Major Ray Nolen of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said. The man and woman on the motorcycle were thrown by the impact of the crash. Neither appeared to have been wearing helmets at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said. The motorcyclist who died at the scene of the crash was identified as Chase Grob, 18. The female passenger was taken to the trauma center at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake. She succumbed to her injuries overnight Sunday (8/13/2023). She was identified as Victoria Baker, 25, of League City. The Kia was driven by an Uber driver who also had a passenger in the car. Driver and passenger sustained minor injuries and refused medical care. Investigators said Saturday and again Monday speeding by the motorcycle was the primary factor in the crash. Sheriff’s Office sergeant on scene also stated when the Kia driver claimed to have looked both ways that it was clear. Given the motorcycle’s rate of speed, there was little time to avoid a crash, sheriff’s investigators said. While the full crash investigation continues, “it’s a very strong indication speeding was the factor in the crash, Nolen said on Tuesday while providing an update. Family and friends of Grob established a GoFund me account to help his family pay for a funeral.
